What is Social Media Optimization (SMO) ?

Social media optimization (SMO) is a set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a "Digg This" button, blogging and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos. Social media optimization is related to search engine marketing, but differs in several ways, primarily the focus on driving traffic from sources other than search engines, though improved search ranking is also a benefit of successful SMO.

Social media optimization is in many ways connected as a technique to viral marketing where word of mouth is created not through friends or family but through the use of networking in social bookmarking, video and photo sharing websites. In a similar way the engagement with blogs achieves the same by sharing content through the use of RSS in the blogsphere and special blog search engines such as Technorati.

Origins

Rohit Bhargava was credited with inventing the term SMO.[1] His original five rules for conducting Social Media Optimization are:
1. Increase your linkability
2. Make tagging and bookmarking easy
3. Reward inbound links
4. Help your content travel
5. Encourage the mashup
6. Get communities connected

What is Onpage SEO Tips?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website's rank in the search results by changing different aspects of the website. Whenever an end user makes a search on a search engine for some specific keywords, a list of websites that contain information on those keywords is displayed and then the end-user visits these websites to get the desired information.

There are a number of websites that compete against each other and so, a website owner needs to optimize his website accordingly so as to improve his website's rank in the search results in order to improve the traffic. Also, the search engines are getting smarter and intelligent day by day. So, it is not a very easy task to have your site rank high in the search results for its targeted keywords. However, if an individual optimizes his site accordingly then he can definitely improve the rankings.

On-page optimization and off-page optimization are two branches of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Both of them are essential if you want to rank high in the search results. On-page optimization deals with several internal aspects of the website whereas off-page optimization deals with aspects that are not under the control of the website owner. Again, both of them are required if you want to rank high for your targeted keywords.

Title Optimization: The title tag is a very important element as it is the first thing that is indexed and shown by the search engines and it is also used by people to identify you and your business. So, it has to be descriptive in order to make people visit your site when they see your site in the search results and at the same time, it has to be appealing enough for search engines so that they show the site in the search results.

It is advisable to include some of your keywords in the title of the site but you should make sure that the title is readable so that users can understand it and click the link so as to visit the site. Also, you should not stuff the title with too many keywords as this will not help you in improving your site's rank in the search results.

Meta Tags Optimization: Now-a-days, Meta tags are not as important as they used to be but you cannot ignore them. The meta tag should contain a brief description of the site so as to make an end-user visit your site when it is displayed in the search results. It should also include some of your keywords but you should not stuff it with too many keywords.

Keyword Optimization: Websites with great content rank high in the search results. Your content should be suitable for the readers and for the search engines. You should place your keywords strategically such that the content is still useful for an end-user. Stuffing your articles with too many keywords can make them unreadable so should you always pay attention while writing the articles.

Link Optimization: It is advisable to use proper anchor texts while linking to the internal pages. Also, if you're using a content management system then you should use permalinks so as to have the keywords in the link it self. It is also necessary to have a clean internal link structure so that search engines can crawl and index the site properly.

An individual needs to optimize his site consistently in order to maintain and improve the rankings. Again, both the on-page optimization and the off-page optimization are necessary and should be given due importance if you want to rank high for the targeted keywords.

Online Marketing

Internet marketing, also referred to as online marketing, Internet advertising, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet. When applied to the subset of website-based advertisement placements, Internet marketing is commonly referred to as Web advertising (also Webvertising) and Web marketing.[citation needed] The Internet has brought many unique benefits to marketing, one of which being lower costs for the distribution of information and media to a global audience. The interactive nature of Internet marketing, both in terms of providing instant response and eliciting responses, is a unique quality of the medium. Internet marketing is sometimes considered to have a broader scope because it refers to digital media such as the Internet, e-mail, and wireless media; however, Internet marketing also includes management of digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management (ECRM) systems.

Internet marketing ties together creative and technical aspects of the Internet, including design, development, advertising, and sales. Internet marketing does not simply entail building or promoting a website, nor does it mean placing a banner ad on another website. Effective Internet marketing requires a comprehensive strategy that synergizes a given company's business model and sales goals with its website function and appearance, focusing on its target market through proper choice of advertising type, media, and design.
Internet marketing also refers to the placement of media along different stages of the customer engagement cycle through search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), banner ads on specific websites, e-mail marketing, and Web 2.0 strategies. In 2008 The New York Times working with comScore published an initial estimate to quantify the user data collected by large Internet-based companies. Counting four types of interactions with company websites in addition to the hits from advertisements served from advertising networks, the authors found the potential for collecting upward of 2,500 pieces of data on average per user per month.
